Payroll Methodology

Tax Calculation Methodology

ValidPaystubs estimates payroll taxes and paystub totals from the information users enter. This page explains what the calculator covers, what it does not cover, and when to verify numbers against official records.

What We Calculate

  • Gross pay, hourly pay, overtime, salary, bonus, and additional earnings
  • Federal income tax withholding estimates based on filing status and pay frequency
  • Social Security and Medicare payroll tax calculations
  • State income tax estimates where state withholding applies
  • Year-to-date totals when users provide accurate prior-period values

Important Limits

  • Local taxes, pre-tax benefits, garnishments, and employer-specific deductions can vary.
  • Final withholding can change based on W-4 elections, payroll provider settings, and benefit plans.
  • Tax form drafts should be reviewed against official payroll records before filing or sharing.
  • Generated paystub records are not a substitute for official employer portals, IRS transcripts, bank statements, or agency-issued documents.

How to Use Generated Records Safely

A generated paystub should reflect real earnings, real dates, and real payroll assumptions. Before downloading or sharing a document, review gross pay, pay period, deductions, net pay, employer information, and year-to-date totals against your own records.

If a third party asks for income verification, check their required document list first. Many organizations accept recent pay statements, but others require bank statements, tax returns, official payroll portal exports, IRS transcripts, or direct employer verification.
